Walking the Tao – Chapter 15

The Taoist idea of “wu-wei” – or “effortless effort,” is greatly misunderstood. It does not mean the “path of least resistance.” It is about how we deal with resistance, not about avoiding it. We are encouraged to use the way water flows back to its ocean home as a model for flowing around, over, under, or through resistance – all the while maintaining our mindful patient way of being. The cultural norms of consuming, distracting, pretending, putting on a “social media” persona, not making waves, pleasing authority, etc. are the path of least resistance. If you don’t believe me, try stepping off it and see what happens!
