Walking the Tao – Chapter 62

Common, almost universal wisdom, says that a society can only be controlled by a system of punishment and retribution. That wisdom also seeps into the way we attempt to teach virtue to children and to the way we seek to manage our own lives. But punishment, despite our beliefs, has never and will never work. It creates only an illusion of virtue and goodness, never that quality itself. When will we learn?
